Features Lesson Module
Mountains, canyons, lakes, and rivers are some of Earth’s features. Although they give shape to the surface of the Earth, over time the movement of wind and water causes these features to change. In this module, students discover how weathering and erosion change Earth’s features over time.
Core Concept
Earth’s features are the natural shapes on the Earth’s crust. Made up of rock or water, they change due to weathering and erosion.
Essential Vocabulary
Canyon, cave, erosion, feature, island, lake, landform, mountain, natural, ocean, plain, plateau, river, surface, valley, weathering

Explore
The Explore session promotes interest in and curiosity about the factors that influence Earth’s features. In this session students play rock, water, wind to determine which influences the other the most. Students also participate in a teacher-led discussion that encourages them to wonder about how wind and water affect rock. To complete the session, students work collaboratively offline and further explore the impact of wind and water on Earth.
Play the Explore DemoFeature Point
This Elaborate session allows students to apply what they have learned to new situations. In this session, students participate in a selection of activities that focus on science process skills and content understanding. To complete the session, students work independently or with peers to complete an offline activity that reinforces science process skills.
