Animals Lesson Module

Young students are naturally curious about animals. Learning about living beings as part of elementary life science appeals to their sense of wonder and helps them develop empathy for all types of creatures. The Animals module builds on that fascination for students. An animated host begins the unit by introducing students to wild animals in their habitats. In online and offline activities, students broaden their understanding of animals by learning to identify and classify animals into six categories: mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates.

A new addition to our Animals module extends the life science topics to include the human body. Students not only learn more about the parts like the brain, stomach, and muscles, but also their functions.

Core Concept

Animals are living things that have needs, reproduce, respond to their environment, and are made up of different parts.

Essential Vocabulary

Behavior, energy, hibernate, invertebrate, life cycle, migrate, needs, offspring, reproduce, respond, shelter, vertebrate

Interactive Demos

Animal Groups

Using the 5E Model, students are asked to engage, explore, elaborate, and evaluate as they investigate the foundations and principles of science. This Elaborate session promotes the use of formal definitions and explanations in ways that are kid-friendly and accessible for students in grades K-2.

Students participate in offline activities that reinforce the connection between science, literature, and the arts. In this session, students view an animated literature piece and record ideas and thinking in their digital Notebooks. Teacher-led discussion reinforces the science content and encourages critical thinking about living things.

Life Cycle

This Elaborate session allows students to apply what they have learned to new situations. In this session, students participate in a selection of activities that focus on science process skills and content understanding. Students work independently or practice collaboration skills with peers using an offline activity that reinforces science process skills to complete the session.

Additional Information

The Animals module starts with familiar knowledge and builds a strong new knowledge and vocabulary base for deeper learning about animals. Students show what they know about animals through online games, animated activities, and hands-on lessons. The teacher guide includes plenty of ideas for students to share their learning.
