Habitats Lesson Module
A habitat – part of life science topics for elementary students – is the natural home or environment of a plant, animal, or other organism. The Habitats module focuses on the needs of living things. As students consider different habitats in elementary life science, from farms to tundra and grasslands, they begin to understand the importance of both living and nonliving things in a habitat. Students learn about many different habitats and how animals and plants have adapted to thrive where they live.
Core Concept
A habitat comprises the nonliving and living things an animal or plant needs to thrive: food, water, shelter, and space.
Essential Vocabulary
Adaptation, camouflage, depend, ecosystem, environment, habitat, needs, rainfall, temperature, thrive

Engage
The 5E Model, which asks students to engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate, provides a structure to connect students’ experiences with science concepts and apply that knowledge to new situations. The Engage session activates students’ prior knowledge of habitats and their relationship with other life science topics. In this session, students use their digital Notebooks to record their thoughts before watching an animated video to spark their thoughts about different places animals live.
Students also participate in a teacher-led discussion of animals and their habitats. Students collaborate offline with peers to complete the session and continue unpacking their prior knowledge.

This Elaborate session allows students to apply and extend their knowledge to new situations while learning about a unique adaptation called camouflage. In this session, students participate in activities that focus on science process skills and content understanding. Students work independently or with peers to complete an offline activity that reinforces science process skills to wrap up the session.

Additional Information
Science4Us includes a wide variety of opportunities to learn and explore these new concepts through interactive and hands-on activities. For example, one interactive activity allows students to choose and populate a habitat with both living and nonliving things while another challenges them to find camouflaged animals in their habitats. Students learn concepts in the Habitats module that will be expanded in the Eco Awareness module as they learn to notice, appreciate, and protect the delicate balance of the environment.
