Science Tools Lesson Plan
Choose Your Tool
In this interactive activity, students learn about the different things that microscopes and telescopes can be used to observe.
Engage
This activity accesses students' prior knowledge of science tools as they use their digital Notebooks to identify senses and tools before watching a three-minute animated video of two brothers making observations using senses and tools. Following the video, students use their digital Notebooks to draw a food that is hot, red and squishy, and a food that is long, smooth, and yellow.
Evaluate
This online evaluation assesses student mastery of concepts concerning science tools using multiple choice and manipulation activities.
Explain
This four-minute interactive lesson mixes animation with real life video clips to clearly describe science tools and their uses. There are embedded "Show what you know!" opportunities and open-ended questions to prompt student explanation of concepts.
Explore
This session provides students with the opportunity to choose from three different interactive activities that will allow them to explore with tools.
Motion Map
This interactive activity provides students with the opportunity to explore the factors that influence motion as they navigate their way to various destinations.
Ruler T-chart
This interactive activity provides students with the opportunity to practice using a ruler as they measure and sort objects.
SillyBulls
This activity provides students with the opportunity to unscramble syllables of vocabulary words referring to science tools.
Stories, Songs, and Videos
Students choose from nine different literature pieces that include songs, stories, and videos. These literature pieces incorporate science tools into stories the students can relate to and provide students with the opportunity to see how tools are used around them every day.
Suffix Swap
This activity provides students with the opportunity to study word parts of vocabulary related to science tools.
Temperature Tuesday
In this interactive story, students hear about a little girl's experiences with different types of thermometers. After the story, students use thermometers to measure the temperature of objects and sort them as hot or cold.
In the Study
This scorable activity gives students the opportunity to choose the item that best depicts the description provided.
Investigate
Students use different science tools to identify the correct item to collect on a treasure hunt. Measurement and observations skills are highlighted in this interactive activity.
Match It
In this activity, students will match senses with words associated with them.
Pinky at the Vet
This interactive activity provides students with the opportunity to use their quantitative observation skills to help the vet identify the correct animal.
Play the Pinky at the Vet DemoQuestion Conveyor
This interactive activity gives students the opportunity to choose the item that best depicts the description provided.
Take a Note
This interactive notebook activity emphasizes the importance of taking notes. In the first round, students attempt to answer a series of questions about an image from memory. In the second round, students are able to save the image in their digital notebook to use as a reference and are then asked similar questions.
