Tornado in a Bottle Experiment

Objective

In this experiment, students will learn about vortexes.

Materials

  • Clear, water bottle (12oz or larger)
  • Water
  • Pitcher
  • Container or paper towels for spills

Experimental Procedure: 

  1. Fill up the bottle with water.
  2. Up-cap bottle (if not already uncapped) and hold the palm of your hand to the mouth of the bottle.
  3. Next, flip the bottle upside down while firmly holding palm to the mouth, so that no water spills out.
  4. Then swirl the bottle of water around.
  5. Hold the bottle over the empty pitcher and remove your hand.
  6. Watch the tornado funnel form as the water drains into the pitcher.
