1st-Grade Curriculum Overview

First grade STEM and science curriculum overview.

Exploration fuels first graders’ STEM science journey.

First graders gain new understandings of everyday concepts through investigation and exploration. For STEM learning, students use their imagination and prior knowledge to answer questions about what they know and develop their own ideas of how things work.

What does STEM look like in first grade?

First graders use observation and STEM skills daily, making them experienced scientists. Science4Us keeps the science and literacy lessons moving forward with fun STEM activities aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. First-grade students develop science concepts and literacy skills in more depth, including scientific vocabulary, by recording what they learn. Building on skills from kindergarten, students learn about the different states of matter and how to observe matter. Investigating various energy forms is another science concept, including light energy, sound energy, and how energy is transformed.

What do first graders learn in STEM?

In our first-grade STEM curriculum, students revisit topics in math and science and explore new subjects. Physical Science gives the youngest scientists the opportunity to grow their understanding of everyday objects and how they work in our daily lives. For Inquiry Science activities, students play and experiment to see what happens and begin to build their own rules and expectations about how the world works. Life Science activities will expand on what the students learned in kindergarten about plants and animals by focusing on the characteristics of living things and the diversity of life. In the Earth and Space Science lessons, students will receive the foundation to develop an understanding of the Earth. Our 1st-grade curriculum prepares students for 2nd-grade STEM!
