What does STEM look like in second grade?

Science4Us' second-grade STEM curriculum continues with engaging math and science activities and games aligned to Next Generation Science Standards that take students to a deeper level of understanding. Second graders absorb more complex material than in previous grades, and the science content is ready for that. With an increased knowledge base and growing skills, expect these students to cover a greater number of modules during the school year. Reviewing some modules, such as Tools, Plants, and Animals, from kindergarten and first grade allows students to acquire new and more sophisticated understandings of the topics.

Second graders use scientific inquiry for simple science investigations. Students interact with materials and learn to ask questions. Through the literacy component of Science4Us, students build scientific vocabulary and science skills through activities and games.

What do second graders learn in STEM?

Through lessons infused with literacy and math, second graders continue the quest for science learning with fun STEM activities. From the Physical Science Magnets unit, students learn about force and motion through the properties of magnetism. With Inquiry Science, second-grade students demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry, including the skills, processes, and tools necessary to conduct a simple scientific investigation. In Life Science, students will show knowledge of the needs and characteristics of animals and the way they interact with their own distinct environments. In the Weather unit of the Earth and Space Science lessons, students learn about different weather elements and how weather can be observed and measured using tools. Our 2nd-grade curriculum prepares students for future STEM classes!
