Changes in Matter Lesson ModuleMaterials
- Empty plastic water bottle (8 oz.)
- Balloons
- 1 paper funnel (you can make this yourself)
- 1 measuring cup
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- 1 teaspoon
- Black marker
Research Questions: What kinds of reactions occur during this experiment? Why do you think the balloon changed? How can you tell if a change is a physical change or a chemical change?
Experimental Procedure:
- Measure and pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the water bottle.
- Place the paper funnel into the opening of the balloon, and then measure and pour 4 teaspoons of baking soda into the balloon.
- Keep holding the balloon by the opening, with the rest of it hanging downwards, baking soda contained inside. Fasten the balloon onto the lid of the bottle very carefully, making sure the baking soda does not spill into the bottle--not yet anyway!
- On the count of three, tilt the balloon upwards so that the baking soda falls into the bottle.
- Watch a reaction occur, and say hi to your new ghost friend!
