Project
In My Estimation
Objective
This science fair project helps students measure their estimation skills. Students recognize when something is really big or really small, but being able to provide an estimation of size is a skill all students need.
Outlined in this project is the purpose and hypothesis to help clarify the point of the project. The approximate duration, a short materials list, and an easy to follow procedure is also included. Finally, questions to ask along the way and upon completion of the project are provided.

Purpose: To hone estimation skills.
Question: How big is big? Can you get better at estimating?
Hypothesis: If I practice using measuring tools then I will be able to better estimate the size of something.
Statement: Practice with measuring tools will help estimation skills.
Procedure Outline:
- Pick two objects.
- Record how long or tall you think each object is.
- Use your ruler to record how tall or long each object really is.
- Pick two different objects.
- Record how long or tall you think each object is.
- Use your ruler to record how tall or long each object really is.
Be on the lookout for…
Are you measuring the objects using centimeters or inches?
Were you any closer? If you need more practice, pick two more objects and record how long you think they are, then use your ruler to measure how long they really are.
