Dancing Kernels Experiment

Objective

In this experiment, students will learn about chemical reactions between baking soda and vinegar.

Materials

  • Clear, empty cup (8oz. or larger) 
  • White vinegar
  • Tablespoon
  • Mixing spoon
  • Pitcher of water
  • Popcorn Kernels
  • Baking soda

Research Questions: What kinds of reactions occur during this experiment? Will the corn dance?

Experimental Procedure: 

  1. Pour the water into the empty cup, filling it about half-way. 
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup of water and mix until it is completely dissolved. (may take a few minutes)
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of popcorn kernels to the cup.
  4. Pour some of the vinegar into the cup. You will see it start to fizz. 
  5. Using the mixing spoon to stir the mixture so that the popcorn kernels begin to "dance".
  6. You can even add a little more vinegar to really see the kernels "dance".
