Dancing Kernels Experiment
Objective
In this experiment, students will learn about chemical reactions between baking soda and vinegar.

- Clear, empty cup (8oz. or larger)
- White vinegar
- Tablespoon
- Mixing spoon
- Pitcher of water
- Popcorn Kernels
- Baking soda
Research Questions: What kinds of reactions occur during this experiment? Will the corn dance?
Experimental Procedure:
- Pour the water into the empty cup, filling it about half-way.
- Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup of water and mix until it is completely dissolved. (may take a few minutes)
- Add 2 tablespoons of popcorn kernels to the cup.
- Pour some of the vinegar into the cup. You will see it start to fizz.
- Using the mixing spoon to stir the mixture so that the popcorn kernels begin to "dance".
- You can even add a little more vinegar to really see the kernels "dance".
