Animal Parts Science Activity: Sorting and Grouping

Objective

This activity provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate concept mastery by sorting and grouping animal parts.

This offline demonstration of mastery activity can be completed after participation in the online Animal Science Explain Lesson.

Upon completion of this activity, students will be able to sort and group animal parts with 80% accuracy.

Estimated time for activity: 20 minutes

Materials

  • Animal parts picture cards, one set per student
  • Construction paper (8.5 x 11), one sheet per student
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Crayons

Procedure:

  1. Distribute construction paper and instruct students to fold their paper to make four boxes.
  2. Students label their boxes with crayons: feet, arms, mouths, and tails.
  3. Distribute the animal parts picture cards.
  4. Students cut out pictures and sort into four piles, one for each animal part.
  5. Students glue pictures on construction paper under the proper heading.
  6. Lead a class discussion in which students share answers and compare and contrast the animal parts.

Accommodations:

If students have difficulty sorting the animal parts, a variety of accommodations can be employed.

  • The teacher can conduct the activity at the front of the class.
  • The activity can be completed at a center with an aide or with the teacher.
  • The activity can be completed in peer groups of two to three.
  • The activity can be completed with a science buddy from an older grade.
